The Baruch Padeh Medical Center, Poriya (PORIYA) was established in 1955 on the Poriya Heights, replacing the Schweitzer Hospital and the Maternity Hospital of the Scottish Church that were in the city of Tiberias.
PORIYA is situated on the Poriya ridge above Tiberias and serves a region of approximately 180,000 permanent and temporary inhabitants from Tiberias, the Golan Heights, the Jordan Valley, the Lower Galilee, and all the towns, villages, kibbutzim and settlements in the region. The diverse population includes Jews (minorities, religious, traditional and secular), Arabs, Moslems, Christians, Druze and Circassians. In addition to the permanent residents of the area, the hospital also tends to the needs of visitors such as soldiers of the IDF stationed nearby, the UN forces whose headquarters are in Tiberias and tourists that visit the Kinneret beaches, holy sites and other attractions primarily in the summer.
PORIYA provides high quality medical care similar to the standards given in larger medical centers in Israel. The hospital prides itself in having a top notch staff, superior lodgings and state of the art medical equipment.
PORIYA is one of the first five government hospitals that are contending for accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI). We are now in the final stages of the review process, striving for certification by the JCI. When accredited, the hospital will join other prestigious, accredited medical centers around the world in providing superior and safer medical care.
PORIYA has 284 inpatient beds, and 30 bassinets for newborns. Being the only one in its locale, the hospital provides all medical services except for cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. In certain specialties, such as maxillofacial surgery, we are a national referral center.
Recently, PORIYA has seen an unprecedented expansion, and this is already after renovating the Medical and Cardiology Wards, a new Nursery as well as the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Unit. Presently, we are in the mist of opening the New Emergency Department and are in the final stages of rebuilding the Obstetrics and Gynecology Division which will include New Delivery Rooms, Gynecology and Obstetrics Wards, High Risk Pregnancy and IVF Units. The hospital is also making plans for a new entrance to connect to the highway leading in to its complex.
PORIYA has 900 employees including physicians, nurses, paramedical and auxiliary staff. The ethnicity of our staff reflects all the segments of the population that we serve and we take great pride of the healthy, harmonious working relationship that our employees have had with each other over the years.
PORIYA has a major role in the establishment and development of the New Medical School in the Galilee. In the upcoming 2011-2012 academic school year PORIYA's academic wards will be an integral part of the Medical School. This collaboration is expected to increase and enhance the academic activities in the hospital that will improve the quality of care.
Being the only inpatient facility in the area, we feel that it as our responsibility to provide excellent and caring medical treatment with a special emphasis on empathy to the patient and their family. Providing quality, professional and courteous service is the heart of the "culture of service" that is given at PORIYA to one and all. The overwhelming response of trust in the hospital by the patients and the public says it all.
